DIET TRENDS THAT WORK

Hi everyone just thought I would share my opinion on diet trends focusing on keto diet ( Based on experience seeing different clients and patients).

Description
The word keto is a description of what happens in ur body when u use mainly fats and protein (ketosis happens as the body breaks down fats as a source of energy and ketone bodies are formed (byproducts).

Comparison to other diets
This (fat utilisation for energy) has been and will always been the goal in weight loss eating (including the low carbohydrate and low calorie diets) as when we provide less energy (quantified as calories) or carbohydrate from food sources we end up utilising excess body fats for energy.
So the keto diet focuses on providing protein and fats so that the body utilises mainly these for energy hence it’s basically a high fat, high protein diet with nearly a total elimination of high carbohydrate foods; sadly some fruits are exclusions.

Does it work?
Yes results happen if all dietary factors like meal timing, proper hydration and generally a lower energy intake.

My Concern
Diet trends tend to focus on one component of diet without letting you perfect the overall healthy eating habit (which should be the goal).
So what I have seen in some persons is eating excess fat and not focusing on other important nutrients, meaning that weight loss maybe achieved but the individual looks sickly most of the time

Low energy (low glucose levels), a drastic reduction of carbs.
Ugandans routinely eat loads of carbs at each meal so total exclusion often gives individuals low energy levels, often noticable with low energy in gym sessions and at work.
Any change should be gradual if you are to do it for a lifetime.

Wait gain instead of loss on Keto
Focusing on high fat and high protein eating can make you gain weight if done wrong.
There is also a great amount of weight re-gain when you focus on a diet program and not a lifestyle change.

Does one diet prescription fit all!
My other concern is people take on diets without individualised guidance. Eg:Taking on high fat eating without knowing your current lipid profile or blood glucose levels, ongoing medication especially Diabetes Drugs my is a risk. We cannot ignore the researches that over the years showed the impact of low fat eating on improving lipid profiles and blood glucose levels despite the ongoing controversies over the same.

There are so many diet trends, they come and go.

So many people follow one diet after the other and never develop daily healthy eating habits

Tip: do not focus on a particular eating trend, if eating for weight loss consider all factors and develop a mindful eating habit.

Scenario: What if you decided to go plant based and the next week a friend tells you how the carnival diet (animal protein) is more effective, then you find a friend juicing and rush back to fruit only diet, next I could tell you that your blood group is allergic to the tomatoes that you have eaten all your life without seeing any reaction. Oh not forgetting how all of a sudden the trend says high fat is good for your heart😅(questionable). Then at the end of the month you do just intermittent fasting or any of the many detox plans without focusing on your meal composition and get bad results.

Identify your health goal and get the right guidance customised for you considering your health, medical history food likes and consideration of your budget.
